Think about it! Whatever random force decided to poof Lena Horne’s sexy ass into existence is the same one that decided it needed one of me, too. And you! It’s amazing. Kinda makes you wanna go everywhere, do everything, take chances, you know?

Desiree Winns

The context of the following screenplay pertains to the experiences of African-Americans during the 1960s. Therefore, some language has been added for authenticity and to capture the effect of the time period on its characters. The intention of such language is meant to be an example of reclaiming slurs and making the best out of a difficult struggle for equal rights. Although the script does not entirely revolve around issues of racism, the African-American experience, as well as the words and culture that come with it, is prevalent in order to tell a story that encourages diversity not only with characters of color, but with storylines that allow them to become complex and compelling cinematic figures.

DESIREE WINNS is a senior at Bonn International School in Bonn, Germany, and aspires to be a screenwriter. She was a writing finalist for the National YoungArts Competition and in Harlem International Film Festival's Short Screenplay Competition, the 2013 Tennessee winner for the Do the Write Thing Essay Competition, and has received a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
