My work revolves around the idea of pushing boundaries and taking the power back, particularly involving my many years in Catholic school. After reflecting on past experiences, I started to take action. Throughout my selection, I showcase a journey from questioning authority to taking action. I touch on many different kinds of defiance—socially, patriarchally, religiously, and academically. When creating my large-scale imagery, I am inspired by all things crude and controversial and often opt to mix different art styles together. I often think about what is considered appropriate vs. what is inappropriate and why. What excites me the most about making art is testing the waters of what I can depict and finding new ways to push boundaries.
I paint at a larger scale because it allows me to get in people's faces. I primarily work with acrylic painting and linoleum printing because I want my messages to be accompanied by bold imagery. I arrange imagery like a collage; the characters seemingly hold their own space, recklessly unaware of the others. Scale is also very important in my work. My painting process is similar to that of muralists and street artists. I create a doodle grid, a more non-traditional upscaling method that involves scribbling random shapes on the surface before transferring the sketch to the canvas. In the future, I wish to use these skills for public art which I believe will expand my meanings further.
